Orthopantomogram / CBCT / Targeted X-rays

Radiological diagnostics allows us to see structures that are not accessible to clinical examination and to plan further therapy more precisely.

Information

When is a dental X-ray needed?

Dental x-rays are used when an examination does not provide enough information about the condition of the teeth, roots, bone, or surrounding anatomical structures.

May be required:
  • in case of suspected caries that is not clearly visible upon examination
  • before endodontic treatment
  • for pain of unknown cause
  • before the extraction of certain teeth
  • during implant planning
  • wisdom tooth evaluation code
  • during orthodontic planning
  • for monitoring the previously treated area

What is the difference between an orthopantomogram (OPG), CBCT, and a targeted dental X-ray?

An orthopantomogram provides a panoramic view of both jaws, teeth, and surrounding structures, offering a good overview of the overall condition.

A targeted radiograph shows a smaller area with more detail, for example, an individual tooth and its root.

CBCT provides a three-dimensional view of the selected area and is used when more precise information about anatomical relationships is needed for planning.

We determine the type of scan based on the reason why the diagnostics are being performed.

Why is just one type of recording not always enough?

A wider scan provides a better overview of the entire jaw, but it may not show all the details needed for a specific procedure.

On the other hand, a targeted image can show an individual tooth very well, but it does not provide an overview of the broader anatomy.

Therefore, diagnostics are chosen according to the specific question we want to clarify, rather than on the principle that „more is always better.”.

An orthopan provides a two-dimensional panoramic view of the jaws, while CBCT enables a three-dimensional view of the selected area.

In implant planning, CBCT may be required to evaluate bone volume and its relationship to surrounding anatomical structures. The necessity is assessed individually.

No. Scans are performed when there is a clinical need for them.

The actual recording usually takes very short, while preparation and positioning depend on the type of recording.

If you have them, it is useful to bring them because they can help in comparing the condition over time.
