Child's first check-up

The first visit to the dental clinic is an opportunity for the child to get acquainted with the new environment without pressure, and for the parent to receive clear information about the health and development of their teeth.

Check-ups

When is the time for the first check-up?

You shouldn't wait for pain or cavities for your first visit to the dentist. An early examination allows monitoring of tooth development and the creation of the habit of regular check-ups while there is still no unpleasant experience.

The review may make sense if:
  • The child's first teeth have started to erupt
  • The child has not been to the dentist yet.
  • you want to check if the teeth are developing properly
  • you have noticed a change in color, a stain, or tooth damage
  • The child is complaining of sensitivity or pain
  • do you want advice on teeth brushing, nutrition, or pacifier use
  • you want to gradually introduce the child to the dental office before any potential treatment

The first meeting without unnecessary pressure

The examination begins with a conversation with the parent and introducing the child to the space, the doctor, and the simple parts of the examination.

Depending on the child's age and cooperation, we examine the teeth, bite, gums, and development of the oral cavity. The parent receives recommendations for oral hygiene, diet, and further check-ups.

If the child is not ready for a complete examination, the approach can be adjusted. A positive experience and building trust are more important than forcing a non-urgent procedure.

How to prepare a child for their first dental visit?

The best preparation is usually simple and neutral. You can explain to the child that they will meet a doctor who will look at their teeth and show them how to keep them healthy.

Try to avoid phrases that create fear in advance, such as „it won't hurt,” „you have nothing to be afraid of,” or describing your own unpleasant experiences in detail.

If the child has questions, it is enough to answer briefly and calmly. We will explain the rest to them at the clinic in a way that is appropriate for their age.

The first check-up is recommended early, after the eruption of the first teeth, in order to monitor development and oral health and to provide parents with preventive guidelines.

Depending on age and cooperation, the teeth, gums, bite, and development of the oral cavity are examined. The parent also receives recommendations for oral hygiene and nutrition.

We are not trying to complete the examination at any cost. Sometimes the first visit is primarily an introduction to the dental office, after which the examination is gradually expanded during subsequent visits.

It is best to present the examination as a routine and positive part of healthcare. There is no need to describe instruments or possible procedures in detail beforehand.

In younger children, the presence of parents often helps them feel secure. The method of examination is adapted to the child's age and reaction.

During the examination, we assess the extent of the condition and explain the treatment options. The plan is tailored to the condition of the teeth and the child's ability to cooperate.

The frequency of check-ups is determined individually according to age, tooth condition, caries risk, and oral habits.

Yes, in certain cases. Baby teeth play an important role in chewing, speech, space maintenance for permanent teeth, and oral health.
