Are corrective gum procedures for you?

The relationship between the teeth and gums significantly affects the appearance of the smile, as well as the health and long-term stability of the teeth.

A corrective procedure may be considered when the gum line is uneven, when the gums cover a large portion of the tooth, or when they have receded and exposed the tooth root.

Surgery may be an option if:
  • when you smile, you show more gums than you would like
  • teeth look short due to excess gingiva
  • The gum line is uneven around the adjacent teeth
  • one or more teeth look out of harmony with the rest of the smile
  • The gums have receded and exposed a part of the tooth root
  • it is necessary to restore the shape, height, or function of an individual tooth
  • gum contouring should precede the fabrication of veneers, crowns, or other aesthetic restorations

Shaping the relationship between teeth and gums

Gingival corrective procedures encompass various treatments that alter the shape, height, or position of the gums.

In the case of excess gum tissue, a portion of the tissue can be removed and reshaped to make a larger area of the natural tooth visible. This procedure is often called a gingivectomy or clinical crown lengthening, depending on the extent of the procedure and the condition of the tissue beneath the gums.

When treating gum recession, the goal can be to protect the exposed root and improve the appearance of the gum line. The type of procedure is always determined after an examination.

Aesthetic correction or gum treatment?

Changes in the appearance of the gingiva are not always just an aesthetic issue. Excess, swelling, or recession of the gums can be related to inflammation, tooth position, brushing technique, thin tissue, or other factors.

If the gingiva is healthy, the procedure can be planned to harmonize its line with the tooth proportions. If there is inflammation or periodontal changes, it is first necessary to treat the cause and stabilize the condition.

The aim of the examination is to distinguish an aesthetic irregularity from a lesion that requires treatment.

These are procedures that alter the shape, height, or position of the gums. They can be performed to improve tissue health, protect the teeth, or harmonize the appearance of the smile.

In certain cases, it can. Before the procedure, it is necessary to determine whether the cause lies in the amount of gingiva, tooth position, lip, jaw, or a combination of multiple factors.

The procedure is most commonly performed under local anesthesia. After the treatment, sensitivity, tightness, or mild discomfort may occur, depending on the type and scope of the procedure.

Initial healing can take from several days to several weeks, depending on the type of procedure. Final contouring and stabilization of the gingiva may require more time.

The change is often visible immediately, but the final appearance is assessed only after the swelling subsides and the tissue heals more fully.

The stability of the results depends on the type of procedure, tissue anatomy, oral hygiene, and the elimination of the cause that led to the change. Possibilities are evaluated individually.

In certain cases, recessed gingiva can be covered with a surgical procedure. The result depends on the extent of the recession, the position of the tooth, and the condition of the surrounding tissue.

It can be recommended when it is necessary to harmonize the gum line or ensure proper conditions for prosthetic work. After the procedure, it is often necessary to wait for the tissue to stabilize.
