Aesthetic filling or veneer: what is the difference?

Patients often ask us whether a cosmetic filling or a veneer would be better in their case. Both can improve the look of a tooth, but they differ in material, procedure and the situations in which they make sense. Which is more suitable depends on the condition of the tooth and is assessed at an examination.

Below we calmly explain the main differences, so that it is easier to follow what we discuss at the consultation.

Cosmetic filling: when it is an option

A cosmetic filling is a composite material applied directly to the tooth. It can be an option for minor irregularities, chips or small gaps, while preserving healthy tooth tissue.

Veneer: when it is an option

A veneer is a thin shell that covers the front surface of the tooth. In certain cases it gives a longer-lasting result where changes in shape or colour are more pronounced, but the tooth preparation and procedure differ from those for a cosmetic filling.

The main differences at a glance

A filling is usually made there and then in the surgery, whereas a veneer often involves preparation and fabrication outside the mouth. They also differ in durability, how they treat tooth tissue and price. Neither approach is universally better – it depends on the individual case.

What is assessed at the examination

At the consultation we look at the condition of your teeth, your wishes and what is realistically achievable. On that basis we decide on the best way forward and explain the advantages and limitations of each option.

Frequently asked questions

Is a veneer always better than a filling?
Not necessarily; in some situations a cosmetic filling is more suitable, and the decision depends on the condition of the tooth.

Is a cosmetic filling the cheaper option?
Often it is, but we assess the price and suitability for each case separately.

Can I switch from a filling to a veneer later?
In certain cases, yes; the options are assessed at the examination.

At the examination we can assess what makes sense in your case and suggest the next step.
